Medieval - Interior Design

Introduction

Medieval interior design is a blend of functionality and opulence. Designs were developed out of necessity, materials such as wood, metal, stone, and ceramics were crafted to create long-lasting objects that served a purpose. Enhanced by rich, heavy fabrics bringing beauty and texture to a space.

Style

Textiles are an important part of this design style, a mixture of velvets, linens, heavy cottons, hemp, and wool are used for layered drapes, wall coverings, pillows, and tapestries. These materials, in a mixture of solid colours or varied patterns in rich earth tones, compliment the dark wood and stone throughout, as well as adding dimension. Metal details for decor and lighting such as candle sconces and chandeliers break up the neutrality of the room. Creativity in the space is shown through visual storytelling using art and fabric to depict historical events.

Inspiration

Medieval interior design was inspired by churches and religious art, it was especially popular throughout Europe. Utilising materials that were available at the time, it has been a design style that has been admired and recreated for centuries. It is respectful of specialised crafts and promotes sustainable production.
